Publish date: 2024-06-08

Emma Roberts and Keegan Allen co-star

Apparently James Franco wants to rechristen Labor Day weekend James Franco weekend.

Not satisfied to have his Comedy Central roast air September 2, the multi-hypenated star is also premiering his film “Palo Alto” at the Telluride Film Festival tonight.  Directed by Gia Coppola and co-starring Emma Roberts as a suburban soccer-playing teen, the film is based on Franco’s book of short stories with the same name. Other thesps include Jack Kilmer (son of Val, who also appears) and “Pretty Little Liars'” Keegan Allen.

Vulture first released the trailer, which shows teen debauchery and an age-inappropriate liaison.

The “Palo Alto” premiere also caps off a heightened summer for the Coppola family.  Gia’s aunt Sofia Coppola premiered her film about trouble-seeking teens, “The Bling Ring,” in May at the Cannes Film Festival. It, of course, starred another Emma — this time, Watson.

“Palo Alto” does not have a general release date. In his review from Telluride, Variety film critic Peter Debruge said that “this group portrait of disaffected Northern California teens goes to impressive lengths to develop the characters and shape their experience into something meaningful without ever quite cracking how its various vignettes should function as a whole.”
